Diaper Comparisons

Contours or fitteds? Which contours or fitteds? The hardest part of cloth diapering, in our opinion, involves finding and buying the diapers and covers that work best for you and your baby. Washing and wearing is the easy part! Let's see if we can help a bit with the "which type of diaper" question.

The short version:

  • Fitted diapers, precisely because of the elastic that makes them fitted diapers, hands-down contain messes better. No question.
  • Contour diapers are less expensive and work great for a lot of situations.

What you decide depends on your priorities and your baby. Below are a few comparison points to consider.

Kissaluvs Fitted vs. Contour Diapers

Kissaluvs Contour Cloth Diapers
PROS CONS
  • Less expensive than fitted diapers
  • Faster drying
  • Rise adjustable design
  • Trimmer appearance overall; elastic in fitted diapers creates a little ruffle/bubble because, well, that's how elastic works!
  • No closures (the "pro" side): laying a prefold in a snug wrap is fast and easy ... no time "wasted" on snapping or pinning.
  • No elastic: runny poop can escape onto a cover
  • No closures (the "con" side): laying in a wrap without pinning can allow some drooping room, and some folks are nervous about pinning*
  • If laying diaper in a wrap (i.e., no pins), you need a snug-fitting wrap-style cover
  • Kissaluvs Fitted Cloth Diapers
    PROS CONS
  • Best containment: elastic at legs and waist holds everything inside, even runny breastfed/newborn "stuff"
  • Because of better containment, you need fewer covers
  • Snap closures give stay-put fit
  • Obvious and easy use ... no folding, explaining, or adjusting
  • Dads, babysitters, and grandparents often prefer fitted diapers (and are therefore more likely to change them!)
  • Fitted diapers can be loosely snapped and used as a pull-on diaper for potty-training toddlers
  • Slightly longer dry time
  • More expensive than contours
  •

To save dollars in the early days, some folks opt for contours, prefolds, or environmentally friendly disposables for the first few weeks and move into fitted diapers at the size 1 range. Others swear by fitteds for newborns because "they let you focus on your new baby, not whether the diaper is going to work" during those precious and fleeting newborn days.

Lots of folks use contours or prefolds by day, even if they use fitted diapers for nights, outings and babysitters.

    Kissaluvs Fitteds vs. Other Brands

Kissaluvs Cloth Diapering Tips & Tricks

Rather than try to do a detailed pros and cons list, we'll highlight a few things that may be worth considering when comparing our fitted diapers with other brands:

    • Unique low-rise fit, riding high in the back and lower in the front than many brands
    • The original snap-down umbilical cord area on our size 0 diapers
    • Uniquely adjustable wing snaps on the larger diapers, so you can snap consecutively or over three snaps depending on your baby's build
    • Quality notions ... like a special elastic that isn't stiff and binding, amd heavy-duty thread that resists fraying and pulling
    • Made by our own small, but very professional staff, right here in the USA ... in Houston, to be exact
    • Just a touch of polyester in the base of our fabrics (not touching baby) to help the diapers last much longer without sacrificing the wonderful properties of cotton
    • Pre-shrunk fabrics so you get no big surprises after the first wash!
    • Non-pilling, very durable cotton fleece
    • Availability where you choose to buy ... WAHMs, local stores, catalog and internet retailers, etc.

    Kissaluvs Contours vs. Other Brands

    Kissaluvs Contours vs. Other Brands
    PROS CONS
  • Unique doubler/soaker attachment gives more sizing flexibility (fold or tuck to shorten the rise)
  • Fast drying
  • Narrow crotch width, but thicker through the crotch area (the "wet zone") for a trim fit
  • Long stretchy wings that wrap around baby's waist ... if you choose to pin, you may even be able to use only one pin, depending on the size/girth of your baby
  • That yummy, stretchy, lovely Kissaluvs cotton fleece!
  • COLORS! and unbleached options
  • ???
  • * Regarding pins ... don't be nervous! They work great, are inexpensive, give a custom fit, and are surprisingly easy to manage after just the first try or two. Our fabrics are especially easy to pin, as well.
